Casual Eatery is a takeout restaurant that offers traditional Asian cuisine through though online ordering via a responsive website. My responsibilities included conducting user research and interviews, paper and digital wireframing, low and high-fidelity prototyping, conducting usability studies, accounting for accessibility, and iterating on designs.
This project was created in Adobe XD for the Google UX Design course.
The target audience consisted of users who are busy career professionals and those that have families.
Pain points that I aimed to solve:
Navigation: the process to place an order can be confusing and misleading.
Information: some ordering websites do not provide enough information about their products.
Visual cues: users may become confused about what they are viewing on screen and how it relates to their journey through the ordering process.
Starting the Design
By beginning with a site map, I was able to map out how I would like to set up the pages and visually construct potential user paths.
For paper wireframes, I worked on developing sketches for two different screen sizes: desktop and mobile. This project gave emphasis on the importance of considering the user and their needs in how they will journey through my product and I learned more about how to approach designing a responsive website.
Usability study findings:
Large negative space in various pages of the website made scrolling for information tedious.
Users were not able to back-track in the ordering process to make edits or check information.
Text size was larger than intended and overwhelmed the users.
Refining the Design
In the high-fidelity mockups, the designs were modified in order to accommodate for the pain points identified from the usability study. Imagery became a theme throughout the pages and gave the homepage a space to showcase the logo, important features, and verbiage.
In designing the responsive website for different devices, I enjoyed the challenge of thinking strategically while also remembering to put the user front and center.
Going Forward
Through this project, I learned that taking accessibility into account early on can affect my design and prevent unnecessary iterations further down the line.
The next steps I would take:
Conduct additional usability study on the iteration of the high-fidelty prototype.
Include additional features needed for the ordering process.
